TWIN SHADOW

This was an awesome session.  The wonderful George Lewis Jr (Twin Shadow) brought his long time collaborator and touring musician Wynne Bennett as well as producers BJ Burton (Bon Iver, Sylvan Esso) and Nate Donmoyer (Major Lazer, Passion Pit) to start production of his forth coming album.

Great vibes helped out by some great gear: Yamaha CP70, Eventide H3000, AMS RMX 16, Roland RE-501 Tape Delay to name a few pieces were brought in.  Movies were projected on the control room ceiling for an added touch of ambiance, of course!

Some of the most magical music moments in Gatos history were created and we are eagerly awaiting the final results of this tracking session.

UNSANE

These fine New York City fellers came to work in the Hi Desert (via Italy, Mexico and Northern California, USA) and I'm pretty sure the best Unsane record EVER was made.  It was great seeing these guys work together again after many trials and tribulations and we look forward to hearing the finished record, their first since 2012!!! Long live Unsane!!

THE MEKONS

The Mekons are one of the longest-running and most prolific of the first-wave British punk bands and we were proud to welcome them as our guests at Gatos Trail.  In between shows at some great area venues, including the legendary Pappy & Harriets, we got to work on their next full length album.  The freedom in their creativity was inspiring; writing and recording around the campfire, rapid fire instrument and studio set up changes, group vocals, ancient sea shanties transforming into desert space rock...  The Mekons' instrumentation ranges from traditional guitar, bass & drums to violin, accordion & saz played by Lu Edmonds (The Dammed & Public Image Limited).  In addition, we were able to provide some barely tunable, funky acoustic guitars and some found sound percussion just for a little extra flavor.  The Mekons session will be one that the Gatos Trail family will always hold dear. This quote and it's author says it all: "The Mekons are the most revolutionary band in the history of Rock 'n' Roll"~ Lester Bangs.

NORMAN WESTBERG

Guitarist and composer Norman Westberg is best known for his work in the seminal outfit SWANS but his output beyond that group is sprawling and restless.  Norman is starting to amass a sizable catalog of solo material comprised of hypnotic guitar soundscapes and dreamy dark interstellar drones.  His name recurs and ripples through the New York music and art scenes and I caught up with him last November during his solo record release party at the Brooklyn venue Union Pool.   After recording his live show (details on those recording forthcoming) I was able to sit down with Norman to discuss his solo material, touring and his work with SWANS.  Take a listen to my interview with Norman here:

IVA DAWN

February came to an amazing end when IVA DAWN arrived at Gatos Trail with her band to track her second record.  For the first time at Gatos we, with the help of producer Tom Biller, recorded basics and vocals with the band completely live in one room without any separation or headphones and the results were astonishing!!!  With only minimal guitar and percussion overdubs the record seemed to come together quickly and flawlessly.  Just like the sound of Iva Dawn's songs the process brought back a vibe of era's gone by.  Falling somewhere between Ennio Morricone and Julee Cruise, Iva Dawn's music was the perfect soundtrack for the Desert environment in which it was recorded.  Perfectly moody and perfectly executed, we are very proud to have been a part of this record and will be waiting impatiently for the finished product!!

BIG BUSINESS

Well the month of December got off to an amazing start when Big Business came to Gatos Trail to track 10 new songs for their forthcoming release.  Coady Willis and Jared Warren (Big Biz) brought enormous sounds to life with the help of their long time engineer Dave Curran.  They were knocking tracks down one by one not unlike the golf balls that were sent out into the desert night.  A good time was had by all but most importantly the music killed and a new record was born.  Great job guys, see ya out on the links. ~D

BEHOLD! THE MONOLITH

Another great session has come to an end here at Gatos Trail.  Yes indeed, live... direct from hell, BEHOLD! THE MONOLITH came, saw and kicked some major ass with all of the heavy guitar riffing, precision drum crushing,  thunderous bass thumping and demonic vocal growling that made them famous.  Along with reknowned producer Billy Anderson who's credits include SWANS, MELVINS and SLEEP to name a few, they achieved some of the heaviest, dare I say, best sounds we've had here to date.  We're REALLY looking forward to hearing the final product which is slated for release in early August.  Check out these links for more information on BEHOLD! THE MONOLITH.

T.O.L.D.

T.O.L.D.

We had another great session to kick off the month of March when T.O.L.D. and Grammy Award winning producer Tom Biller entered our studio.  The session focused on drums and we got some amazing sounds and inspired performances.  Pulling mainly from a late 50s Gretsch kit and a late 80s Tama kit we were able to create a vintage combination of dry kick and snares and boomy rack and floor toms.   We also broke out some group foot stomps, some hand claps and some Sympathy For The Devil style percussion jams!  The results will be heard on the upcoming T.O.L.D. album which will be released on Iamsound records.  For more informatoin about T.O.L.D. and Iamsound Records, click on the link below.

Alexander Hacke and Danielle De Picciotto

Alexander Hacke and Danielle De Picciotto

We were very pleased to have Alexander Hacke (Einsturzende Neubauten) and Danielle De Picciotto (Crime & The City Solution) in our studio to write, rehearse, record and mix music for their upcoming album and European tour.   Blending traditional and unconventional instruments (hurdy gurdy, auto harp, effected violins, guitars, samples, voices and drums) there was nothing ordinary about this refreshingly inspirational session.   Oh and in between takes there were album cover drawings, tour poster designs and a video shoot, not bad for a week's work.   Safe to say that these nomads (they've literally been on the road since 2010) are the most prolific artists I've ever had the pleasure to work with.  We wish them luck on their upcoming tour and look forward to having them back in March!   For more information about Alexander Hacke and Danielle De Picciotto check out these links: www.hacke.org , www.danielledepiciotto.com , www.neubauten.org , www.facebook.com/danielle.depicciotto
